If you’ve ever poured your heart into your content only to hear crickets, you’re not alone. For many coaches, showing up online feels like shouting into the void, especially when you’re trying to attract clients without being pushy or “salesy.”

In this episode of Coaching with Impact, I sat down with Hailey Rowe, a marketing and sales coach, behavioral change specialist, and creator of the Freebie Funnel Formula, to talk about one of the most underrated tools in online business: freebies, and how to actually make them work for you.

Hailey has helped countless health and life coaches go from invisible to in-demand using authentic, human-centered strategies. In this conversation, she broke down how to design a freebie that not only builds your email list, but actually converts followers into paying clients.

How Hailey Discovered the Power of Funnels

Hailey’s journey into marketing and sales started early—back in high school, she was selling fitness DVDs. That experience led her into wellness startups in Los Angeles, where she learned firsthand how fast-paced entrepreneurship forces you to wear many hats.

But it wasn’t until she built her own business that she discovered the power of automation.

“There was this one weekend,” she recalls, “when I came back after unplugging and saw sales sitting in my inbox. That’s when I realized the power of email marketing.”It’s that moment, when your systems work for you, that every coach dreams of reaching.

What Exactly Is a Freebie (and Why You Need One)?

At its core, a freebie or lead magnet is a quick-win resource that helps your audience take their first small step toward transformation while allowing you to build trust and grow your email list.

But Hailey warns against treating freebies as throwaway content.

“Just because it’s free doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be valuable,” she explains. “Make it specific, give it a juicy title, and help your audience get a real result.”

She gives an example from her early business days: an Instagram Bio Checklist and Message Mastery Cheat Sheet that helped coaches clarify their message. It wasn’t a 50-page eBook; it was a small, actionable win that solved a real problem.

Common Mistakes Coaches Make with Freebies

Hailey sees it all the time: coaches creating freebies that are too broad or vague.
Instead of a massive “Ultimate Health Guide,” she suggests narrowing it down to something hyper-specific—like “4 Steps to Conquer Nighttime Overeating.”

Here are a few of the biggest mistakes she highlights:

  • Being too generic: Make your title outcome-driven and curiosity-sparking.
  • Giving away too little value: Free doesn’t mean fluffy. Make it actionable.
  • Skipping the tech setup: Don’t just share a Google Doc; set up an opt-in form to collect emails.

“If you’re giving away a Canva link without gathering emails, you’re missing the point!” Hailey said.

Beating Tech Overwhelm

If you’ve ever felt stuck because tech feels intimidating, Hailey gets it. Her advice? Start simple.

Tools like MailerLite or Mailchimp can get you going fast with free plans, drag-and-drop builders, and tutorials all over YouTube.

Start with one landing page, one opt-in form, and one automated welcome email. That’s enough to begin.

“And if it still feels like too much,” she says, “hire someone to set it up once—then it runs on its own.”

But the real mindset shift comes from how you label yourself.

“Stop saying, ‘I’m not a tech person,’” she insists. “That shuts your brain down to learning.”

Free vs. Paid: How to Know What to Give Away

Hailey’s rule of thumb?

Your freebie should be a slice of your paid offer, not the entire cake.

It should give people a taste of your expertise, create momentum, and make them aware of the next logical step (your paid program or service).

For example, her Message Mastery freebie leads perfectly into her paid Inner Circle Program, which helps coaches develop full marketing systems.

“Your freebie builds clarity,” she says. “Your program fills the gap.”

And remember: your freebie doesn’t have to be a PDF. It could be a quiz, audio, video training, checklist, or even a live mini-workshop. Whatever delivers that quick win fastest.o say ‘yes’ to everything; it’s to help you stay in alignment with the business you actually want to build.”

When Should You Build a Funnel?

Once your freebie and welcome email are running smoothly, it’s time to think about automation.

A funnel simply means you’ve set up a system that nurtures your audience over time.

Hailey suggests writing out your funnel sequence in a Google Doc first:

  1. Day 1: Deliver the freebie.
  2. Day 2: Check in. Ask how it’s going.
  3. Day 3: Share a challenge they might face and introduce your paid offer.

You don’t need a 12-email masterpiece from day one—just a thoughtful, human sequence that continues the conversation.

How to Promote Your Freebie (Without Feeling Salesy)

You can have the best freebie in the world—but if no one knows it exists, it won’t help you grow.

Hailey encourages coaches to promote their freebies everywhere:

  • Add it to your website, social media bios, and pinned posts.
  • Mention it on podcasts, collaborations, and live streams.
  • Create a simple shout-out at the end of every video or email.
  • Do freebie swaps with other creators who share your audience.

And most importantly: don’t be afraid to repeat yourself.

“You’re not annoying people by talking about your freebie,” Hailey says. “Most of them haven’t even seen it yet!”

The Mindset Shift That Changes Everything

Promoting your freebie isn’t about you, it’s about serving your audience.

When you talk about your resource, you’re giving someone a tool to solve a problem they’ve been struggling with.
So instead of saying, “I made this freebie,” Hailey suggests focusing on them:

“If you’ve been struggling to X, I created something to help you get started.”

And if you ever feel self-conscious about repeating your message, remember: repetition builds recognition and recognition builds trust.

Start Where You Are

Hailey ends the conversation with a challenge:

“If you had to get a client tomorrow or you’d be fined $2 million, what would you do?”

Most coaches already know the answer. It’s usually something simple they’ve been avoiding, like following up with past clients, or asking for referrals.

So instead of chasing new, shiny strategies, focus on what’s already working and do more of it, with consistency and intention.

About Hailey Rowe

Hailey Rowe is a marketing & sales coach, behavioral change specialist, and the creator of the Freebie Funnel Formula. Her path started early, selling fitness DVDs in high school, then sharpened through a B.A. in Entrepreneurship and hands-on roles in business development and marketing for wellness startups in Los Angeles. That startup pace taught her copy, sales, and “ship it” execution long before she felt “ready.”

In 2017, a company-wide setback became her turning point. After a sudden layoff at a wellness company, Hailey doubled down on helping health and life coaches master the business side, especially authentic marketing, email funnels, and simple systems that turn strangers into clients. A pivotal moment came when she returned from a weekend away to find sales from automated emails waiting in her inbox, proof that the right nurture sequences can work while you rest.

Today, Hailey mentors coaches to design specific, quick-win freebies that connect directly to paid offers, ditch overwhelm, and promote with confidence (not noise). She hosts the Health Coach Nation podcast and shares actionable strategies on mindset, time management, and client attraction.
