A Weekend of Reconnection

This weekend was a very interesting weekend compared to my usual ones. A weekend that I really got to reconnect with many people from 7-8 years ago. It was truly amazing. It started when my friend asked me if I wanted to go to one of my old friend’s birthday party on Friday. Normally, I would have said no simply because the type of parties he hosts usually involve many college kids that act very differently from me. These people were usually those anime-crazy, gamers, geeks, nerds, and wild kids that would put me out of my comfort zone if I spoke to any of them. Since I had already decided that I should be more involved with every type of person and be more open-minded, I decided sure why not. My friend felt the same way but since we were trying to meet new people and get out of our comfort zone we decided to go together. It wouldn’t be that bad as long as we had each other… and alcohol. To put it into perspective, we were the “1st generation Chill Clubbers” from college. There were 8 generations.

So we arrived at the party, a tiny apartment filled with over 50 people. It was hot. It was crowded. It was noisy and it was wild. We were completely out of our comfort zone and felt so awkward. Here we were at a party full of young, hyper college kids. We were definitely too old for this. Yet we stayed until we decided there wasn’t enough alcohol so we went back to my friend’s place to get her bottles and keep them for ourselves for just us to drink. We socialized with some people. My friend got drunk and I got a little tipsy, enough to keep a conversation going without me needing to think too hard. It wasn’t so bad going to this party at the end and I didn’t regret it because there were 5 or 6 1st generation Chill Clubbers who ended showing up to the party. Which was amazing since we hadn’t seen these people for years. We used to be family back in college and now after 8 years we’ve reconnected.

It was great, we spoke, we caught up. I got to know one of the 1st generation Chill Clubbers that I never really spoke to during all those years we were in the same club. I got to know him and I got to reconnect with two of my really good friends. I found out that one of them had already achieved one of the goals I was trying to achieve before me. He had already bought his own house and rented it out to get passive income. Now, I know to definitely keep in touch with him in order to get some advice when the time comes. The other one told me he used to be successful in direct marketing with a team of over 250 people under him until the company he was working for got acquired and it forced him to start over. He had told me that a long time ago but I completely forgot since it’s been years. I will definitely keep in touch since I just got the sales job that I was interviewed for. I will need him for advice.

In the end, I was so glad I decided to keep an open mind and go to the party because I would never had been able to think about reconnecting with them even though I had them on my Facebook list. Now, I have expanded my options and know who to talk to if I need advice in sales or real estate. The best part of the night was my friend who got drunk and was trying to prevent herself from eating chips by going around the party and offering them to other people. She ended up going home with someone else’s left boot that looked similar to hers, it was hilarious.

On Saturday, one of my really close friends invited me to come to her engagement planning event. I arrived at Arabesque Shisha Bar downtown in the afternoon. We ended up being a huge group that composed of the wedding committee. Her father was there as well and he acted like a coach to us. He was older, wealthy, wise and had a lot of life experience. We were considered his kids to him and he treated us all to dinner and shisha. He was so sweet. I had already met him a few times before but this was actually the first time he had sat down with us. During the whole time we were speaking about the wedding and even afterwards at dinner, he was coaching us. He was teaching us about life lessons and what he had to go through to get to where he was. How we could live the life we want if we choose where to spend our money. It was a real lesson to me that day and we all learned so much.

The weekend provided a valuable lesson to me. Going to my friend’s birthday party made us realize how much we’ve grown and progressed throughout the years. It reminded us how grateful it was to be where we were today. My friend had actually chosen me to be her maid of honor. I have never been a maid of honor before so I don’t exactly know what to do besides the fact that I will be her right hand woman during the organization of the event. It was time to work on my management skills and this was the perfect opportunity to test myself in terms of management.

Don’t be stuck doing the same things you every single day. Live your life and explore. Travel the world. Meet different types of people. Get involved in activities. Do something new, get out there and get out of your comfort zone. Because the most uncomfortable conversations are the ones that are the most important ones and that will get you to places.

Good luck guys!
